Recap 28th Salon Concert: Eimear Arkins and Eileen Gannon August 25, 2018 #irishmusic #fiddle #harp #song #thankstoall #IAHC #SalonConcertsChicago

The 28th Salon Concert featured the harp, fiddle, and vocals duo, Eimear Arkins and Eileen Gannon, who presented a beautiful program of traditional music and songs.

Eimear presented many lovely interpretations of traditional fiddle tunes, mostly from Clare, with a few from further afield and a few of her own compositions.  Her take on the much loved Clare tunes “Glen of Aherlow” and “Porthole of the Kelp” were masterful and highly expressive.  She also regaled the audience with her clear, very natural soprano voice several times during the evening, with and without Eileen’s accompaniment on harp. She sang the Connemara Sean Nos song, “An Spailpin Fanach,” her own version of Percy French’s “The Darling Girl From Clare,” and several others besides.

In addition to skillful accompaniment of Eimear’s beautiful singing, Eileen demonstrated her artistry on dance tunes and dedicated harp pieces.  She never failed to weave a spell with her harp playing whether in accompaniment as a soloist.

They gave an encore and stayed late afterward to talk with fans and autograph CDs, a gesture everyone much appreciated.

Thank you to Eimear Arkins and Eileen Gannon for an evening of beautiful music. Thanks again to our sound engineer, John Halliburton, for ensuring we could enjoy it all.

A Recap! Sophie Lavoie and Fiachra O’Regan Salon Concert on May 24th 2018 “..combined an interesting and lively mix of Quebecois and Irish tunes throughout.”

We recently presented our 27th Salon Concert since late 2013, this time featuring Irish and French Canadian couple Sophie Lavoie and Fiachra O’Regan. Sophie and Fiachra combined an interesting and lively mix of Quebecois and Irish tunes throughout the evening.

Highlights included an arrangement of a French Canadian song and dance music utilizing pipes, fiddle, Sophie’s voice, and banjo. Fiachra performed a unique version of the popular air “An Bonnan Bui” followed by an ornate setting of the Bucks of Oranmore on the pipes. Sophie also demonstrated some French Canadian fiddling with foot percussion expertly. It was a totally charming performance and our enthusiastic audience enjoyed themselves mightily.
Thank you to Sophie & Fiachra / Sophie & Fiachra Trio for an evening of beautiful music. Thanks again to our sound engineer, John Halliburton, for ensuring we could enjoy it all.
Thanks also to our door team, Mary Alice McCarthy and Mary Moore for helping make it all happen. Extra special thanks to Mary Alice for minding the kids!!

More about the Salon Concert:
Salon Concerts Chicago proudly presents Irish and French Canadian duo, Sophie Lavoie and Fiachra O’Regan, 7:30 PM Thursday, May 24, 2018, in Room 109.  Tickets $20 for IAHC Members, $23 for non-members. Children and teens 18 and under free.
Described as “Invigorating” by The Irish Times, Sophie & Fiachra take the Traditional Music of Quebec and Ireland and mate it  in a unique way, remaining true to their roots while creating a new and original sound.
Their sound is rooted in the Fiddle playing and singing of Quebecoise Sophie Lavoie and the uilleann piping and banjo playing of Fiachra O’Regan, who hails from the Connemara. Their sound is sweetened all the more by Gaelic and French Canadian song arrangements.
This is Irish Music with a Quebecois Twist at its very best. This is no surprise given Sophie & Fiachra’s track record with delighted audiences throughout the world – and their deep love for, and intimacy with, their respective musical traditions.
“It’s refreshing to hear a traditional band reference the present with such subtlety and finesse”
Siobhán Long, The Irish Times
