Salon Concerts Chicago presents David Power, uilleann pipes, flute, whistle, and songs, with Dennis Cahill, guitars and mandolin.

David Power (pictured) is one of the foremost uilleann pipers of his generation. In the hands of a master like Power, the sound of the pipes evokes many emotions: sadness, joy, remorse, historical memory and more. Power’s abundant talent and technical prowess kindles all of these within a solid and sensitive musicality that is rarely heard. Power has won All-Ireland and Oireachtas piping competitions and has represented Ireland at many festivals abroad.

Power has many theatrical performing credits, including appearances on Broadway and has produced three critically acclaimed solo recordings, “My Love Is In America,” “The Glen Nephin Cuckoo,” and “The Eighteen Moloney.”

Power has also been a member of several groups, including Liam Clancy’s “Fairweather Band,” “Gorumna,” and more recently, Masters of Tradition, which toured in the U.S. in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Chicago native Dennis Cahill is considered one of the world’s finest guitarists in traditional Irish music. His unique playing, accompaniment, and arranging are acknowledged as a major breakthrough for guitar in the Irish tradition. He has played for presidents and prime ministers. “Brilliant” (NPR) and “crucial” (Folk Roots UK) are some of the descriptions of his spare, essential playing.

With special guests: Patrick and Karen Cannady on uilleann pipes and fiddle will be guest musicians at the performance. They will be joined by Donald Terao.

Patrick and Karen are a Chicago-based couple and lifelong musicians who perform regularly in the Chicago, and at festivals across the US. Patrick is rapidly approaching 20 years of piping with many years’ prior experience on the saxophone and tin whistle. Karen has played violin since childhood and became interested in Irish fiddling in the mid-1990s. Together, they undertook to learn the Irish music they found here in Chicago, absorbing traditional melodies from musicians who hailed from Clare, Galway, Mayo, and Sligo. Their music is spare, expressive, and rhythmic, with harmonies supplied by the interplay of drones, regulators, and double stops.

The Academy of Irish Music will open the concert. The David Power and Dennis Cahill Salon Concert is Saturday, October 24 at 8pm.

Tickets are $20 for adults and children 18 and under are free. Tickets can be purchased by visiting http://www.irish-american.org, calling 773-282-7035, ext. 10 or at the door. This concert is made possible by Culture Ireland.
