Salon Concerts Chicago presents Trian, featuring Liz Carroll on fiddle, Billy McComiskey on button accordion and Dáithí Sproule on guitar and vocals on Thursday, April 20 at 8pm in the Fifth Province.

Three of Celtic music’s most acclaimed and award-winning musicians; Carroll, McComiskey and Sproule perform as Trian, a band originally formed in the 1980s. While tied to traditional music, the trio uses exquisite musicianship to take the traditions a step further.

Carroll’s playful and expressive fiddling, along with her massive original repertoire, have made her a worldwide legend. She is a 1994 recipient of this country’s highest honor in folk and traditional arts; the National Heritage Fellowship.

Also a National Heritage Fellowship recipient (2016), McComiskey is revered as player and composer and is credited with raising the profile and stature of the button accordion.

Sproule is one of Irish music’s most respected guitar accompanists and singers in English and Irish, and one of the first guitarists to develop DADGAD tuning for Irish music.

Trian, featuring Liz Carroll, Billy McComiskey and Dáithí Sproule is Thursday, April 20 at 8pm in the Fifth Province. The Academy of Irish Music Performing Group will be the opening act.

Liz was a 1994 recipient of this country’s highest honor in folk and traditional arts, the National Heritage Fellowship.

Named a 2016 recipient of the National Heritage Fellowship, Billy is revered as player and composer on both sides of the Atlantic and is credited with raising the profile and stature of the button accordion. The Brooklyn born artist was called the “finest and most influential box player ever to emerge from the US” by music critic Earle Hitcher.

Born in Derry, Ireland and now based in Minnesota, Dáithí was called a “seminal figure in Irish music” by the Rough Guide to Irish Music. A member of the internationally celebrated band Altan, Dáithí is known for his pioneering guitar styles including the use of DADGAD tuning. He is also a fine singer in English and Irish.

The Salon Concerts series is dedicated to providing its audience with opportunities to listen to high-quality Irish music performed by talented musicians in an intimate and friendly concert setting.

Coming up next Thursday, December 8th! Salon Concerts Chicago presents Cathie Ryan’s The Winter’s Heart: An Irish American Christmas at the Irish American Heritage Center.

Acclaimed Irish singer Cathie Ryan and her award-winning band celebrate a traditional Irish American Christmas through music, featuring Ryan’s heart-stirring vocals and the virtuoso musicianship of Patsy O’Brien on guitar and vocals, Pat Mangan Music on fiddle and vocals and Kieran O’Hare on uilleann pipes, flute and whistles.

From ethereal hymns to exuberant jigs and reels, the concert honors Irish Christmas traditions including placing candles in windows, hunting for the wren on St. Stephen’s Day, Nollaig na mBan; (Women’s Christmas), and the rituals of the Winter Solstice.

The Performing Group from the Academy of Irish Music will open the concert.

The concert is Thursday, December 8 at 8pm in the Center’s Auditorium. Tickets are $25 for adults and children 18 and under are $10.
