A recap of Friday’s Salon Concerts Chicago !

Salon Concert featuring Bill O’Donoghue and Laurence Nugent – September 11, 2015

A keen crowd was on hand to appreciate our September 2015 offering, Waterford-born singer, guitarist, and pianist Bill O’Donoghue and Fermanagh-born flautist and whistler Laurence Nugent.

Together they presented an engaging mix of songs, tunes, and accompaniments. Bill made excellent use of a baby grand piano supplied by the center for the concert on several songs, accompanying his baritone voice with the piano’s lush tones while Larry added inventive and highly varied fills with a variety of whistles, low whistles, and wooden flute.

Larry took many star turns of his own as well, presenting a variety of dance tunes of various types with Bill’s expert accompaniment on guitar and piano. They were well –received by the audience who listened with great attentiveness and applauded each selection warmly. The duo were joined at one point by singer, storyteller, and raconteur Tim O’Sullivan “the bard” who sang “Carrigdonn” in great style. Professional quality sound engineering made the evening especially enjoyable, reinforcing the natural sounds of voice, strings, and wind with clarity and warmth.

Major thanks to the Academy of Irish Music who opened the show beautifully with their arrangements for strings, whistles, and bodhran, to the volunteers who gave their time on a Friday night(!); Mary, Sarah and friends, to the audience, to John Halliburton, and to Noel Rice, Terry Bermes Patrick Cannady and Karen Cook Cannady.

We look forward to next month’s edition, which will feature David Power, the great uilleann piper, and Chicago’s own Dennis Cahill on guitar and mandolin. Don’t miss it!
