The Salon Concerts Chicago series presented its eighteenth concert Friday night, January 8th, featuring Sheila Doorley, a button accordion player from Tullamore, County Offaly with banjo player and flautist Patrick Quinn, of Cleveland, Ohio, and guitarist/singer Frank Quinn (no relation) of Mullingar, Westmeath.

The trio gave a lively, varied presentation of dance music and songs, featuring tasteful arrangements and accompaniment to Frank’s singing as well as blazing instrumentals. Highlights of the evening included an achingly beautiful waltz on low whistle and accordion by Sheila and Pat, a scintillating rendition of an intricate, technical, and altogether beautiful Spanish bagpipe tune from Asturias, and Frank Quinn’s adept cover of the Bob Dylan song, “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go.” The trio’s selection of dance music also highlighted Sheila and Pat’s deep repertoire of jigs, including many lesser known gems among the old standards.

The Salon Concert Series is dedicated to presenting the finest artists in Irish traditional music in a family-friendly, polite listening environment. The concert series is also dedicated to creating and sustaining a knowledgeable audience, and nurturing young musicians by providing them with performance opportunities. To further these ends, children and teens 18 and under receive free admission and the concerts always open with brief performances by young people.

The concert began with performances from the Academy of Irish Music’s junior and senior groups. Both the junior and senior groups play fiddles, viola, cello, flute, whistle, bodhran and guitar. Both groups perform arrangement of their own creation and feature harmonies, semi-improvised passages, and snippets of melody from other genres.

Special thanks to Noel Rice, John Halliburton, Nancy Moore, and Mary Moore for helping to make this great evening happen.

Also, mile buiochas to Shay Clarke ( Blarney on the Air), Sean Ginnelly (Good Morning Ireland Radio Show) , Siobhan O’Connor ( O’Connor Irish Radio Show), Tim Taylor, Mike Shevlin (Windy City Irish Radio), and Erik Carlson (A Feast Of Irish Folk) for granting us some promotional time on your radio programs.

John Halliburton nailed it in his Post! Should be another great night! “Tonight, the 18th in a series started two years ago. Great traditional music from legends in the genre like Andy Irvine and Donal Lunny, to Chicago’s own Liz Carroll, and many more. This evening, Sheila Doorley, Frank Quinn, and Pat Quinn will get your toes tapping and probably your feet moving as well. Come out and have a pint or two and enjoy!”
