Mission of the Salon Concert Series

2013-12-13 21.25.41

The Salon Concert is a monthly presentation of Irish Traditional Culture in an informal setting. The program features mature exponents of Irish music. The Youth Showcase presents accomplished young players.

Long before Concert Halls, folks would invite their friends and relatives to their homes to hear a noted musician or the latest composition.

Irish cultural history tells us about the traveling harpers: Carolan, Carrol O’Daly, Roy Dall O’Cathain, and the Connelan Brothers, who shared music and news.

Second Salon Concert – Ceoltoiri Chicago Friday January 10, 2013 8pm

Ceoltóirí Chicago returns to the Fifth Province Lounge this January, as a part of the monthly Salon Concert Series.

Ceoltóirí Chicago is a four piece Chicago-based ensemble that has forged their vigorous and lively sound for more than a decade of playing for set dancing throughout the Midwest, appearing all over Chicagoland and headlining the set dancing stage at the 2013 Milwaukee Irish Fest.

The band features Joe Sheehan on accordion, Seán Cleland (pictured) on fiddle, John Shine on piano and Tommy Masterson on drums. They will be joined by special guests at their Salon series debut: Jim DeWan on guitar, bouzouki and vocals, and Jonathan Whitall, from the band Chicago Reel) on keyboard and fiddle.

Ceoltóirí Chicago’s music encompasses the windswept polkas and slides of Sliabh Luachra, the lovely flowing music of Sheehan’s home in County Clare, and the great driving music of the City of Chicago, where Cleland, Masterson and Shine learned to play from countless immigrant musicians.

The mission of Salon Concert Chicago: to provide opportunities to be among friends to listen to Irish music, played by talented musicians, in an intimate, friendly, setting. #irishmusic

The Ceoltóirí Chicago Salon Concert is Friday, January 10 at 8pm. The opening act is a group of young dancers and musicians from the Irish Music School of Chicago.

Tickets can be purchased at the door and are $12 for adults and children 18 and under are free.
